THE HONG KONG DESIGN RENAISSANCE FOUNDATION (DRF) MADE THEIR INTERNATIONAL DEBUT ON SEPTEMBER 12THAT LONDON FASHION WEEK FOR SPRING/SUMMER 2020 WITH “ON-SHOW 2020”.
A non-profit organization established in 2013 by industry leaders in the creatives industries, the Design Renaissance Foundation has evolved to become a key platform for the fashion and design industry uniting creatives, traders and industry to foster synergy in business, education and culture within Hong Kong and beyond. Funded by the Professional Services Advance Support Scheme and Commerce and Economic Development Bureau (HKSAR), the DRF is a platform for Hong Kong fashion brands to showcase their collections helping explore the global market and increase domestic exposure.
The Collection of Loom Loop symbolizes a mixture of traditional craftsmanship of the heritage Guangzhou fabric with a modern approach to the contemporary individualism. We design unique pieces for the sophisticated Ladies and Gentlemen. It is a mixture of restraint and boldness, we create new silhouettes with the sophistication of the heritage Guangzhou fabric. The collection adopts a reconstruction approach by using leftover denim fabric and non-shipped sweaters from garment factories. A lifestyle collection including small bags and cushion will be part of the whole collection to further complete the brand. Below is our interview with @LoomLoop conducted by Christian Scott Todd –
What do you wish to convey through the fabrics that you use? We started with a historical fabric called Canton Silk. The richness and story of this exquisite fabric inspired us. It was already listed as one of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in China. We would like to utilize this fabric in a modern way so that it would end up only can find in the museum. And this time, we are lucky to have a chance to crossover with another Intangible Cultural Heritage fabric also, that is Sichuan Silk, with more than a thousand years history.
What is it like combining old traditional styles with new individualistic styles? It is definitely a challenge for us in combining both elements to become something completely new. We need to consider the color harmonious at the same time, also want to have a little be a conflict to make a little attention; as well as some cutting and silhouette, trying to show the past inspiration with some contemporary elements.
What was the reception at London Fashion Week like? This time we showed 14 looks during the London Fashion Week. Although there was an episode in between the presentation; a false fire alarm sound, made all the models run out to the open space for a while, the audience in general found exciting to our collection. May buyers are interested in some of our printed dress and our tailor-made dragon lace pattern blazer.
What about the pouches, backpacks, and handbags makes them visually compelling?
We develop our own graphic pattern every season. In the beginning, we found inspiration from Chinese legend stories. Lately, some Hong Kong old traditional building such as Haw Par Mansion and Kowloon Walled City inspires us. First, we consider how to apply them to our dress and tops. Later on, we also try to match the total look, to have some prints on our pouches, and accessories collection.
What are some of the places where the designs are the most popular?
We are highly appreciated by our customers with our independent, unique, original print. Combining the Chinese element with modern ways; also, with a little touch of humorous.
What do you hope to do with the designs in the future?
We would like to have more chances to crossover with a different spectrum, not just limit ourselves as a fashion designer. For example, we did an acoustic sound panel cooperating with Tai Ping Carpets by using carpet with our graphic design. We are looking for different challenges in the future.
